Money Matters: Your First Paycheck and Beyond!

Milton 2 USSFCU Foundation at Williamsburg Middle School

In the USSFCU Foundation’s mission to enhance financial inclusion, wellness, and literacy, USSFCU employee volunteers visited Williamsburg Middle School in Arlington, VA, to present financial workshops to students this week.

The topic, “Money Matters: Your First Paycheck and Beyond!”, taught students how to read their first paycheck, decode a paycheck stub, and explore responsible budgeting habits using the 50/30/20 rule (allocating 50% to needs, 30% to wants, and 20% to savings). The workshop also examined types of accounts and financial institutions.

Across five class presentations, 125 seventh- and eighth-grade students practiced dividing imaginary paychecks according to the 50/30/20 rule and shared real-world examples of financial decisions they may face in young adulthood. Classes actively participated in discussions, asking questions on the topics and beyond.

Each student received a resource folder with at-home financial literacy and career readiness materials, courtesy of our partnership with Banzai Best Life Wellness.

Thank you to Mrs. Briones and Williamsburg Middle School for the opportunity to discuss financial literacy with your students.
